Page 1 of 2 Here we are installing a set of 550cc side feed injectors that fit the stock fuel rail and a Z32 Air Flow Meter (MAF) on Matt K's 1993 180sx. To do these mods you must have some sort of computer to compensate for the changes in air and fuel flow. We are installing a custom tuned ECU for this car's mods. (sorry no pics, but thats easy stuff)
First remove the stock fuel rail. Be careful not to break any of the fuel hoses unless you have replacements. Ensure that you don't bend or crimp the hard fuel lines, as this will ruin your fuel rail or you FPR.
There are four black plastic washers under the fuel rail bolts. Don't drop these or they will mysteriously dissappear into some secret place hidden from man... and you will never see them again.
So here's how it looks with everything out of the way.
Removing the stock injectors can be tricky. Don't just try to pull the out from the top with a pair of pliars, they will break. It's best if you apply pressure from the bottom and pull from the top at the same time. The method pictured here (rubber mallot) is NOT the preferred method unless you don't care about the injectors.
Here's a REALLY closeup shot of one of the new injector connectors. These particular injectors fit the stock rail but use different connectors to the wiring harness. Fitting them into the rail was as simple as putting on the bottom O-ring and pushing them in. (being careful to keep them clean and not break them)
Injectors are simple solenoids, so they don't have polarity. You can wire them with either wire to either side, they will work regardless. Make sure the injectors you use are high-impedance, like the stock SR computer wants. I prefer to keep the stock injector connectors right on the harness. This gives you the ability to easily switch back to stock injectors, or say you upgrade to injectors that use the same connector as stock later on. You just tape them closed for protection. (You don't want to short your injectors out, fire can happen!)
Here's Matt installing the fuel rail with the new 550's in it. That pesky strut bar got in the way and had to be lifted.
Be sure to put the little black plastic washers back in!
All done with the injectors, now on to the air flow meter! (Follow on to page 2!)
